I LOVE turbo kick. Turbo is the exercise class that doesn't feel like a workout - until the end when you realize you are dripping with sweat! It's fun, it's different, and it's energizing. I have lost over 40 lbs.- yes that's 40 lbs. - I can hardly believe it myself but it's true. Joanie is a terrific instructor - she is knowledgable, she's an inspiration, and she's just a great person!  I get upset if I ever have to miss one of her classes. Hi Joanie,

   I just wanted to thank you for yesterday's class. Wow! What a workout! I always considered myself a workout video queen, I have done tons of them and get the moves pretty quickly (its not hard to get through one for me either) but last night I was barely able to keep up. I don't think I have sweated that much, ever. I'm definitely feeling the effects this morning, but I know I actually did something good for my body last night. This is exactly what I'm looking for to get into the shape I want to be for my wedding and for my life.

Joanie has an amazing, positive attitude and makes a tough workout so much fun. She’s also great at helping people of all fitness levels have success with Bootcamp! It’s one of my favorite hours of the week.
Another thing about the class that I love is the atmosphere. I only knew one person when I started, but it feels like you have a little family when you’re done. Everyone is so welcoming and it doesn’t matter how good or bad you are at the moves, because everyone encourages you. Love it!

Hey Joanie!!! I just had to share this with you. Tonight was my first time back on the volleyball court in two years since having my second child. When I went back to play after having my first child it was horrible. I couldn't move... I couldn't jump... It took me forever to get back in the swing of things. BUT!!!! Since having my second child it has now been two months that I have been taking your classes and tonight showed me how much of a difference it has made. Volleyball is my one true passion that has been with me my whole life and since giving up the coaching part of it so that we could start a family this is the one time of year that I get to do something for me and it felt so good. I didn't need any time to get back in the swing of things. I could run and jump and could feel the difference in myself all because of your classes. So I just wanted to say thank you for making one of my passions in life that much more enjoyable. I might not be able to move tomorrow after the pounding my body took tonight but I'll see you in class tomorrow!

Parkinsons Boxing Class

Fight Back Against PD

Boxing gives people with Parkinson’s disease hope by improving their quality of life through a non-contact boxing based fitness curriculum.

Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative movement disorder which can cause deterioration of motor skills, balance, speech and sensory function. The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation estimates there are more than 1 million people in the United States diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and more than 60,000 people are diagnosed each year. Rock Steady Boxing is the first boxing program in the country dedicated to the fight against Parkinson’s.

In our classes, exercises are largely adapted from boxing drills. Boxers condition for optimal agility, speed, muscular endurance, accuracy, hand-eye coordination, footwork and overall strength to defend against and overcome opponents. At RSB, Parkinson’s disease is the opponent. Exercises vary in purpose and form but share one common trait: they are rigorous and intended to extend the perceived capabilities of the participant.

Various studies in the 1980s and 1990s supported the notion that rigorous exercise, emphasizing gross motor movement, balance, core strength, and rhythm, could favorably impact range of motion, flexibility, posture, gait, and activities of daily living. More recent studies, most notably at Cleveland Clinic, focus on the concept of intense “forced” exercise, and have begun to suggest that certain kinds of exercise may be neuro-protective, i.e., actually slowing disease progression.

Our clients attest, and academic institutions, such as University of Indianapolis and Butler University, are reporting and documenting the improved quality of life among our boxers. Discovery of a cure may be many years away but in the last seven years, there is evidence that progress is made in all stages of the disease by those participating in the RSB program.
